Understanding Diamond Clarity

A diamond is graded for clarity based on the organic identifiers (called "inclusions") found within a diamond that make it naturally unique. Clarity ensures your diamond will have a beautifully clean sparkle.

If you want to find a diamond with the most exceptional sparkle, look for a diamond that's earned one of the highest grades clarity, like the ones you'll find here at Ritani. We only use diamonds within our engagement rings that are graded from Flawless to Slightly Included for clarity; ensuring that your engagement ring will have a sparkle she’ll notice.

What is Clarity?

Diamonds are graded for clarity based on the finish on the outside of the diamond, and the appearance of any natural internal organic identifiers produced by nature. Look closely inside any Ritani diamond, chosen for its exceptional clarity, and you won't notice anything other than its beautiful sparkle.

Diamonds are one of nature's wonders, and a diamond with one of the highest clarity grades — like IF or FL — is even more incredible to see. If you are considering the balance of clarity to the other three Cs, consider that we've hand–selected diamonds that have no inclusions that are distinguishable without magnification, even in the diamonds with the lowest clarity grade we offer. This ensures that even if you choose a diamond with SI-clarity, you will be amazed by the sparkle, not distracted by visible inclusions.

What Are the Different Grades of Clarity?

  • FL — Flawless. No inclusions or blemishes; an extremely rare diamond.
  • IF — Internally Flawless. No inclusions, only blemishes; a very rare diamond.
  • VVS1 — Very, Very Slightly Included 1. Inclusions are minute and invisible to the unaided eye. Under magnification, inclusions are typically visible from the pavilion.
  • VVS2 — Very, Very Slightly Included 2. Inclusions are minute and invisible to the unaided eye. Under magnification, inclusions are typically visible from the crown.
  • VS1 — Very Slightly Included 1. Inclusions are considered minor and are not visible to the unaided eye.
  • VS2 — Very Slightly Included 2. Inclusions are minor and only rarely visible to the unaided, untrained eye.
  • Sl1 — Slightly Included 1. Inclusions often remain invisible to the unaided eye.
  • Sl2 — Slightly Included 2. Under close inspection, inclusions are usually visible to the unaided eye.
  • I1, I2, I3 — Included 1, 2, and 3. Inclusions may be visible to the unaided eye. Ritani does not use diamonds with this clarity in any of our handcrafted engagement rings.
