Romeo and Juliet: The most romantic movie couples

With the new Romeo and Juliet movie in theaters, we’re looking back at other romantic couples that have graced the screen. Being huge fans of Claire Danes’ and Leonardo DiCaprio’s 1996 performances, we look forward to seeing the next generation’s portrayal of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers.

pride and prejudice

An absolute classic, Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is a true tale of opposites attracting against the odds. We’re partial to the BBC version, starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, but it’s really the heartwarming story that counts.

sybil and branson

While we’re slightly cheating here (seeing as it’s on TV) it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Julian Fellowes wrote the screenplay for Romeo and Juliet. The Downton Abbey creator is adept at creating couples we all fall in love with. You might think we’d jump to Mary and Matthew, but Sybil and Tom Branson, the chauffeur, are our favorites. Born on different sides of the track, this ill-fated couple exemplifies the class struggles at the heart of Downton.

You may laugh, but Grease really is one of the most romantic movies of all time. If you don’t like musicals, fair enough. But Sandy and Danny’s clumsy navigations of jock, greaser and ‘good/bad girl’ identities in order to please each other are endearingly sweet – and yes, somewhat hilarious.

pretty woman

Julia Roberts and Richard Gere are iconic romantic comedy actors – how can you go wrong? While there was some debate over which to include here – Runaway Bride is also a great choice – ultimately, Pretty Woman won out. It’s the more serious of the two, with a moving storyline that deals with wealth, prejudice, and loneliness.

princess leia and han solo

Star Wars isn’t exactly classed as a romance saga, but it does deal with family, love, and friendship in the face of adversity. While they love to hate each other at first, it’s obvious that Princess Leia and Han Solo quickly develop mutual feelings. Leia says, “I happen to like nice men.” It turns out that Han Solo is one of the good guys, after all.

jack and rose titanic

While some are put off by its cheesiness, our hearts indeed go on and on for Titanic. Jack and Rose seem destined to meet aboard the ship and in their short time together, fall madly in love. Even if you’re not a romance fan, the second half is a riveting watch.
