Lab grown diamonds are relatively new to the jewelry world, making it easy for myths and misconceptions to be formed about them. Here are 7 common myths about lab grown diamonds debunked.
Myth #1: Lab grown diamonds are fake diamonds.
Some people think that lab grown diamonds are the equivalent of cubic zirconia, but this is simply not true. Lab grown diamonds are 100% real diamonds. They have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as mined diamonds. It is highly unlikely that an expert gemologist would be able to tell apart a lab grown diamond from an earth grown diamond without proper equipment.
Myth #2: Lab grown diamonds are better than earth grown diamonds.
A common misconception is that lab grown diamonds are more perfect than earth grown diamonds because they are formed in a controlled environment. This isn’t true, and we’ll explain why. Lab grown diamonds are grown through extreme heat and extreme pressure, just like mined diamonds. Extreme heat and pressure are what cause inclusions to form. Therefore, some lab grown diamonds will have inclusions. We even carry SI2 lab grown diamonds in our inventory.
Myth #3: Lab grown diamonds are graded differently than earth grown diamonds.
This is only partially true when it comes to GIA-graded lab grown diamonds. The GIA grades lab grown diamonds more loosely when it comes to color and clarity. For example, a lab grown diamond will receive a “Near Colorless” grade rather than an “H” color grade. For clarity, a lab grown diamond will receive a “Very Slightly Included” grade rather than a more specific “VS1” or “VS2” grade. You can view a sample GIA lab grown diamond report here.
Other grading laboratories like the IGI, GCAL, and HRD will assign specific color and clarity grades to lab grown diamonds so that you can fully understand their 4 Cs. At Ritani, we only offer lab grown diamonds that are graded by one of these three laboratories.
Myth #4: Lab grown diamonds are the only ethical option.
Earth grown diamonds are ethically sourced. Because of the Kimberley Process, 99.8% of the diamonds on the market are conflict-free. So if you end up choosing an earth grown diamond over a lab grown diamond, there’s nothing to feel guilty about.
Myth #5: Lab grown diamonds are cheap.
Lab grown diamonds are certainly less expensive than earth grown diamonds, but they are by no means “cheap.” They are authentic diamonds, and no diamond is ever free.
Myth #6: Lab grown diamonds are tacky.
You’ve learned by now that lab grown diamonds are exactly the same as earth grown diamonds. So how can a lab grown diamond be tacky? It’s a real diamond! They look identical to mined diamonds and can sparkle just as beautifully.
Myth #7: Lab grown diamonds can’t be insured.
Lab grown diamonds can definitely be insured. We recommend that you insure your engagement ring, or any other valuable or sentimental piece of jewelry. You can learn more about jewelry insurance here.
