The natural luster of pearls has always made them a classic jewelry choice but, until recently, they sometimes had unapproachable or overly conservative connotations. In the last couple of years, however, the jewelry industry and its celebrity fans have been breathing new life into the iridescent gem. Here are some of the chic pearl jewelry styles that have been taking over the red carpet and catwalk these past few seasons.
Pearl stud earrings are often a wedding day choice for blushing brides who want to frame their face with a luminous glow. Diamonds singer Rihanna showed her love for another certain gem, wearing double pearl studs, chunky pearl bracelets and a chic pinky pearl ring to the 2015 Dior Resort show.
At this year’s Golden Globes, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did an incredible job hosting yet again. However, we were most intrigued by Amy’s jewelry look on the red carpet before changing for the ceremony. A bright blue Stella McCartney gown was accessorized with a modern pearl necklace, while on her left hand she wore a large pearl and diamond cocktail ring. The block color of her gown, while eye-catching, allowed her lustrous accessories to take center stage.
With her signature monochromatic style and iconic red lips, Janelle Monae always makes a fashion statement. This look, with an oversized pearl necklace, pearl stud earrings and brooch, however, made us do a double take. Playful in excess, Janelle’s pearls and suit appeared to be an inspired nod to the Pearly Kings and Queens of London.
Ariana Grande is a fan of pearl earrings, both as drop and stud styles. Their naturally creamy color brings a feminine touch to any ensemble, and suits the pop singer’s quirky but sweet sartorial style.
Emma Watson has graced the red carpet in the same double pearl studs seen earlier on Rihanna, but we also long this single pearl drop earrings look from her. Edgier than her usual style, the contrast between a tough leather biker jacket and the femininity of pearls is simply stunning.
Nobody, however, has made more of a statement with pearls recently then Lupita Nyong’o. Her Calvin Klein Oscars gown was embellished with over 6,000 round pearls, for a show-stopping spectacle that stood apart. The dress was actually stolen but once thieves realized the pearls weren’t genuine (the dress would have been far too heavy for Lupita to wear if they had been real), it was returned.
