What is a ruby?

Rubies are red gemstones that symbolize love, passion, protection, and power. Rubies are considered precious gemstones, along with sapphires, emeralds, and diamonds. In fact, both rubies and sapphires belong to the corundum mineral family. Rubies get their color from the trace element chromium. Rubies can appear pinkish-red, purple-red, blood red, or dark red. They are the birthstone for July as well as the gem for 15th and 40th anniversaries.

Rubies have a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale (diamonds are rated as a 10), making them an excellent choice for engagement rings, wedding rings, and fine jewelry.

How much are rubies worth?

Rubies can have the highest price-per-carat of any other colored gemstone. The color, vibrance, and clarity of the stone are all aspects that affect its price. Fluctuating market demands can also affect the cost of rubies. In 2015, a 25.59-carat ruby ring sold at auction for $32.4 million ($1,266,901 per carat). This set a new record for colored gemstones.
