This is the second installment in our blog series called ‘Why I work at Ritani’. With teams in New York and Seattle, we aim to highlight the passionate and talented people who are improving the ways customers shop for luxury jewelry and engagement rings.
Today, we’d like to introduce Hal Deranek, who works at our Downtown Seattle location.
Tell us a little about your role at Ritani.
I oversee the QA team, going between testing, managing, and creating automation. One of the things that I really enjoy about my job, and that can be very challenging, is that it’s rarely the same week to week. New projects are coming in every other week, changes to the site are made to different areas with each release, and QA is in the middle of everything. It’s really exciting that we get to touch all of the new projects rather than only look at one area of the site/business.
What do you love most about working for Ritani?
Two things: the technology and the people. The things we’re working on and the ideas coming through this company are stellar. It’s amazing to see some of the technologies we’re developing come to fruition (like the new in-store RFID/iPad app). It’s great to be able to come in every day and see the future of the industry being made. As far as the people, everyone here is driven to do their best work possible while not taking themselves too seriously. Everyone has fun and many like to hit the occasional happy hour after work. It’s refreshing.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Needlework. I can do a drop-stitch that your grandmother would be jealous of. That, or music. I have been playing bass for over sixteen years, though I am currently “between projects”. Interpret that as you wish.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the QA industry?
QA is an interesting field since, at least for us, it isn’t strictly technical and isn’t strictly customer focused but is a mix of both. Our job is a mixture of customer service, problem solving, technical know how, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask. There’s always something to learn and there’s always more things to test. Find what you like to do in the field and learn as much as you can about it.
