Meet November's Two Vibrant Birthstones—Citrine and Topaz!

Those who celebrate their birthdays in November are lucky to have two exquisite birthstones—topaz and citrine. Although topaz comes in a dazzling spectrum of colors, the blue topaz variety is the most prized, while citrine is renowned for its delightful yellow and orange hues. Both of these birthstones are associated with soothing qualities and are believed to bring luck and a sense of calm to their wearers. The affordability of most topaz and citrine gems, as compared to some other birthstones, means that November-born individuals have a plethora of options. The real challenge lies in deciding which one to embrace!

Topaz

There are varying theories on the origin of the term topaz; some suggest it may be derived from the Sanskrit word "tapas," signifying "fire," while others trace it back to the Greek term "topazos." Throughout history, the November birthstone, topaz, has been associated with numerous benefits. In ancient Greece, it was believed to give individuals added strength, while in Europe, during the 1300s to the 1600s, it was thought to possess the power to ward off magic spells and quell anger. For centuries in India, there has been a prevailing belief that wearing this gemstone over the heart ensures longevity, beauty, and intelligence. Minas Gerais, a Brazilian state, has been a significant location for topaz mining for over two centuries, supplying high-quality topaz. Presently, other significant sources of this November birthstone are Namibia, Nigeria, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

Citrine

Used in jewelry for thousands of years, citrine is admired for its transparent yellow to brownish-orange hues. The name is believed to have its origins in the French word citron, which means lemon, and according to traditional lore, citrine is given as a gift for the thirteenth wedding anniversary. Today, citrine is considered one of the most affordable and sought-after yellow gemstones. Bolivia, Spain, Madagascar, Mexico, and Uruguay are among the primary origins of this November birthstone.
