Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup Tie the Knot—See Her $50K Marquise Diamond Sparkler!

Since early spring, speculation swirled around whether Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup were engaged after Watts was spotted with a gorgeous marquise diamond sparkler on that hand while out and about in New York City—however—the couple remained tight-lipped until recently. In April, the Mulholland Drive actress appeared on the Today Show wearing her new gleaming ring. When hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb questioned Watts about whether she was engaged, she gave them a humorously ambiguous response.

How Did They Meet?

The initial connection between Crudup and Watts began during the filming of Netflix's psychological drama series Gypsy in the fall of 2016. Portraying a married couple on screen in the series, their bond formed during this shared project. Although their connection dates back to their co-starring roles in 2016, it took six years for The Watcher actress and Almost Famous actor to publicly appear together as a couple on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in February 2022, where Crudup received a nomination for his role in The Morning Show. The couple was also in attendance at the 74th Emmy Awards later that year, where Crudup was nominated once again for his role on The Morning Show.

Their Wedding Day

The pair officially tied the knot on Saturday, June 10th, at a courthouse in Manhattan. Watts’ wedding day ensemble consisted of a white lace Oscar de la Renta gown and a bouquet of white flowers bought from a local deli. Her floor-length gown showcased a square neckline and a flared skirt, complemented by elegant gold high-heeled sandals. Watts completed her bridal look with a new wedding ring, accompanying her breathtaking marquise diamond engagement ring. As for the Big Fish actor, he wore a timeless navy blue suit with a white button-up shirt and a calla lily boutonnière, opting not to wear a tie, giving him a more relaxed look.

The Historical Allure of Marquise-Cut Engagement Rings

The marquise cut diamond is not only an elegant diamond shape with a noble name, but it also has a fascinating royal heritage. This diamond cut has been revered in aristocratic circles for centuries and gradually gained popularity among mainstream consumers in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The inspiration for the marquise cut goes back to the French Royal Court. Louis XV's love for diamonds was deeply ingrained in his nature, influenced by his wife, Marie Antoinette, who adorned herself with opulent jewels throughout her illustrious life. Louis XV's grandfather, Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, astonished his guests at extravagant candlelit dinners by draping himself in diamonds from head to toe. Having multiple mistresses was customary among royalty, both then and now. Madame du Pompadour was one of Louis XV's cherished lovers. According to legend, the origin of the marquise cut can be traced back to a masked ball in Versailles. During this event, King Louis XV encountered Jean Antoinette Poisson and instantly fell under her spell. He appointed her as his chief mistress, granting her a prominent position at his court with the title Marquise de Pompadour also known as Madame du Pompadour. The king declared her lips to be the most perfect he had ever seen, inspiring him to commission a royal jeweler to create a diamond design that mimicked the shape of her lips, giving rise to the marquise-cut diamond.

What Sets Marquise-Cut Engagement Rings Apart From Other Diamond Shapes?

In addition to their fascinating origin story, marquise-cut diamonds have the benefit of appearing larger than their actual carat weight due to their elongated, shallow shape, which maximizes their surface area, enabling more of their carat weight to show in jewelry settings. Additionally, this shape has the added bonus of giving the flattering illusion of making fingers appear longer and slimmer. Yet another benefit of the marquise-cut diamond is its elevated crown and slender base, which allow more light to enter the stone and enhance its brilliance.
