The Vintage Hollywood Charm of Emerald-Cut Diamond Engagement Rings

Emerald-Cut Engagement Rings Have a Distinguished History

Influenced by the Art Deco movement of the 1920s, which emphasized clean lines, symmetry, and geometric shapes, emerald-cut diamonds rose in popularity during that era. Emerald-cut diamonds have a contemporary and timeless appeal with a vintage vibe that never looks dated. In the 1950s, Grace Kelly, the former actress who became the Princess of Monaco, helped elevate the popularity of this engagement ring style even further when she received a much-coveted 10.48-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring from Prince Rainier III of Monaco. But that wasn’t Grace Kelly’s only engagement ring. Before receiving her famous emerald-cut diamond ring, the prince gave Grace Kelly an eternity band composed of alternating rubies and diamonds, representing the colors of Monaco’s flag; just a placeholder before receiving what was considered her official engagement ring.

Not long after Grace Kelly was gifted her impressive engagement ring, Elizabeth Taylor was also given a massive 29.4-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring from her third husband, film producer Michael Todd at the end of 1956. It was the largest of her ten engagement rings, and due to the diamond’s enormous size, she referred to it as her “ice skating rink.”

Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor's widely admired emerald-cut sparklers have inspired many engagement rings and continue to do so decades later for individuals who love the vintage Hollywood glamor of this particular diamond shape. Since Kelly and Taylor carried the torch, other celebrities, including Anne Hathaway, Beyoncé, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lawrence, Amal Clooney, and Paris Hilton, have done the same, donning exquisite emerald-cut engagement rings.

What To Look For In An Emerald-Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

Aside from the ever-important 4Cs of diamonds, anyone buying an emerald-cut diamond engagement ring should know a few additional details about this specific cut. Your diamond's length and width are entirely up to your preference, although a 1.45 to 1.55 ratio is recommended. An emerald-cut diamond needs to have the proper depth ratio since that is the element that will help you attain brilliant shine, optimal light reflection, and a mirror-like quality that makes emerald-cut diamond rings so desirable. A depth ratio of 60% to 70% of the diamond's width is recommended to achieve maximum sparkle. Due to their long facets, imperfections or inclusions are more noticeable with this cut, making it necessary to aim for a clarity grade of VS2 (very slightly included) and higher to ensure that your diamond has a brilliant and flawless appearance.

Emerald-Cut Diamond Engagement Ring-Spiration!

Due to having a more sizable surface area than many other diamond cuts, emerald cut diamonds give the illusion of appearing larger than their actual carat weight, furthering their allure. The elongated design and step-cut faceting are ideal for the buyer seeking something understated; they are perfect for someone seeking a sophisticated, vintage style that will never become obsolete. Emerald-cut diamonds are well suited to a variety of engagement ring settings. Here are some exciting options to consider!
