Claw Prongs vs Round Prongs

claw prong vs round prong

Prongs are essential: without them, you will lose your diamond. Prongs are the tiny pieces of metal that hold your diamond and secure it to the setting. Most engagement rings have 4 prongs, although 6-prong and 8-prong settings are also popular styles. The two most common types of prongs used in engagement rings are claw prongs and rounded prongs. Each prong type will provide a subtly different look to your engagement ring.

Claw Prongs

Claw prongs taper, in other words, they become smaller at the tip. They have a sharp but delicate appearance and can be used for any diamond shape.

Another popular style of the claw prong is the double claw prong setting, which gracefully secures your diamond with an extra set of prongs. Double prongs don't necessarily provide more protection for your diamond; it's more of an aesthetic choice.

Round Prongs

Round prongs have a less dramatic effect than the claw prong and feature a rounded edge rather than a pointed one. If you are going for a more minimalistic look, you may prefer round prongs over claw prongs. Round prongs are a great way to secure your diamond.

Which prong style is better?

It’s all about preference! These are both timeless options that will keep your diamond nice and secure.

We recommend for any engagement ring that you get it inspected once a year to make sure the prongs haven’t loosened. Prongs can become loose over time if they snag on things like sweaters or blankets, or if they are hit too hard. Luckily, jewelers can easily tighten prongs if they do become loose. Free prong tightening is included with your lifetime warranty when you purchase your engagement ring from Ritani.
