The Process of Creating a Custom Engagement Ring

Your better half is truly one of a kind, so it’s only fitting that your beloved’s engagement ring should be equally unique! There are numerous components to consider when creating a custom engagement ring–so many that it can seem downright bewildering. We want to simplify it for you, to eliminate any confusion from this exciting and joyful process. Most importantly, be sure to do your research and learn about every available option for this meaningful investment.

Lab-Grown or Earth-Grown Diamond?

This is hands-down the most important decision you will need to make while creating a custom engagement ring and it will require some research on your behalf. In a nutshell, lab-grown and earth-grown diamonds are identical in their chemical composition and optically indistinguishable from each other, however, there are many factors to consider concerning both types of diamonds. In recent years, sales of lab-grown diamonds have skyrocketed as more environmentally and socially conscious couples seek diamonds that are sustainably produced and conflict-free. Lab-grown diamonds also cost approximately 30-40% less than earth-grown diamonds with identical attributes. Some couples, however, still prefer earth-grown diamonds for their rarity and uniqueness.

White Diamond or Colored Diamond?

Although white diamonds are the most traditional choice for engagement rings, colored diamonds are a rising trend to consider. Colored diamonds come in the same shapes as white diamonds, and are available as either lab-grown or earth-grown. A key factor to keep in mind is that earth-grown colored diamonds are significantly more costly than earth-grown white diamonds of the same carat weight due to their rarity. Buying a lab-grown colored diamond will give you the same quality and allure at a fraction of the expense.

Learn About The 4 Cs Of Diamonds.

Conceived by the founder of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1940s, the 4 Cs of diamonds represent the defining elements that characterize a diamond’s essence: color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. They have, in effect, established universal standards in the diamond jewelry industry. Although all 4 Cs are important, a diamond’s cut is of particular significance since its cut is what determines a diamond’s sparkle and can make a diamond appear larger or smaller. Round-cut diamonds offer the most intense sparkle. Marquise-cut diamonds, oval-cut diamonds, and pear-cut diamonds have the largest surface areas of all diamond cuts, giving them the illusion of appearing bigger than diamonds of the same carat weight.
