Do You Sleep with Your Engagement Ring On? You May Want to Reconsider.

By Brenna Ferrentino on November 11, 2020

Many newly engaged people wonder if it is okay to sleep with their engagement ring on. The answer is that it’s not recommended.

Sleeping with your engagement ring on can put unnecessary pressure on your ring, which can bend prongs. Prongs that become loose a recipe for disaster – you don’t want to lose the diamond(s) in your ring. Added pressure can also bend the shank, making your ring not-so-circular. An engagement ring with a thin shank is especially prone to bending, which is why we don’t recommend choosing a ring with a shank that is smaller than 1.5mm.

Why does this happen? Gold is a soft metal. But platinum can bend, too. It’s not indestructible.

Another reason you should avoid wearing your engagement ring to bed is because blankets, sheets and hair can snag on your ring, which can pull and loosen prongs.

Of course, wearing your ring to bed a few times likely won’t cause a ton of damage. But over time it is possible.

The only time it’s okay to sleep with your engagement ring on is if you are certain that you will lose it if you take it off, for example, if you are staying at a hotel and checking out the next morning.

When you are at home, create a designated spot to keep your engagement ring every time you take it off so that you do not lose it. You may want to consider getting a ring dish for your bedside table.
