Review: Ritani vs Jared

Ritani engagement rings

If you’re looking for a loose diamond or engagement ring, it’s crucial to find the right seller. Not all jewelers have the same perks and benefits.

By now, you’ve probably heard of Jared, a large chain store owned by Signet Jewelers, which also owns James Allen. But how does Jared compare to Ritani? Which jeweler should you choose?

Keep reading to get a breakdown of Ritani vs Jared.

Engagement Rings & Diamond Quality

Jared is a popular destination for preset engagement rings (rings that have a pre-selected diamond). Many shoppers are drawn to this, thinking it’s an easier way to shop, or simply because they don’t know any better. When you choose a preset engagement ring, you lose control of the ring’s quality.
Jared’s preset engagement rings typically feature low-quality diamonds. Not only are they low-quality, but they are not certified.

Jared engagement rings feature diamonds with I1 or I2 clarity. Diamonds with I1 or I2 clarity are not eye-clean and are so included that they can be weaker than other diamonds with better clarity grades.

This clarity grade is so low that Ritani does not offer it. The lowest clarity grade Ritani offers is SI2.

Jared engagement rings also do not specify the stone’s cut quality. Cut determines how much a diamond will sparkle. Cut quality will also impact the price and value of a stone. With that said, when you purchase a preset engagement ring from Jared, you really have no idea exactly what you are paying for.

At Ritani, you get full control over the quality of your engagement ring. Shoppers must choose a diamond, then choose their favorite setting. With a variety of different filters, it’s easy to find the right diamond and setting.

Diamond Pricing

Even though their preset diamond engagement rings are their best seller, Jared still sells loose certified diamonds that can be added to an engagement ring setting. However, these diamonds come at a higher premium when you purchase them from Jared. Here is a comparison of the exact same diamond (GIA cert #6395252507) sold at Jared and Ritani – a 2.01 round-cut natural diamond with an Ideal cut, D color, SI1 clarity, excellent polish, excellent symmetry, no culet, no fluorescence, 55% table, slightly thick (faceted) girdle, 62.6% depth, and measures 7.99 x 8.04 x 5.02.

The diamond costs $29,880 at Jared. *

The same diamond costs $26,147 at Ritani.

By choosing Ritani, you would save $3,733.

Diamond Certificates

Jared’s certified diamonds on their website exclude certificate numbers. Here’s an example of a cert on their site:

It’s likely that they do this to avoid comparison shopping, or to make it more difficult for customers to get a price match.

At Ritani, we want you to get the best deal. We include report numbers for each of our diamonds. In the unlikely event that you find the diamond for less somewhere else, we will price match it.

Diamond Price Transparency

You deserve to know exactly what you are paying for. That’s why we include a cost breakdown for each diamond on our site.

Ritani's Diamond Cost Breakdown tells you the diamond cost (how much the diamond cost to get from the vendor), fulfillment costs (like shipping duties, customs fees, and more), our markup, and the final retail cost.

Jared does not offer this information to its customers.

Best Value Diamonds

best value diamonds

To simplify and take the stress out of diamond shopping, Ritani gives diamonds with exceptional value a Best Value badge. Ritani uses historical market prices to determine which diamonds are Best Value; each diamond’s 4 Cs and other factors play a role in this. These Best Value diamonds can be found under the Recommended tab so shoppers can easily find them.

Jared does not indicate which of their diamonds is the best value.

Diamond Information

diamond information

Ritani breaks down each diamond’s information in an easy-to-understand way. For example, Ritani indicates if their diamond appears smaller, larger, or equal to its carat weight. This information is calculated from the diamond’s proportions. This information is extremely important because it is difficult to see how large a diamond will appear online. Many shoppers also aren’t aware that diamonds can appear smaller or larger than their carat weight indicates, as carat is simply a measure of weight.

Ritani also helps customers understand if their diamond is eye clean based on its specific inclusions as well as its clarity grade. While diamonds on Ritani's site have HD imagery and/or videos listed, it is sometimes difficult to tell for beginner shoppers whether the diamond will be eye-clean in person. Ritani also lists which inclusions may affect your diamond’s appearance.

Jared does not provide details on how large a diamond will appear or if it will be eye-clean.

Diamond Price Alerts

The diamond market is full of surprises, and prices can change at any moment. Ritani gives its customers the ability to set up diamond price alerts, which will notify shoppers via email if the price of the diamond goes up or down.

Jared does not offer this feature.

Diamond Inventory

While shopping for a diamond, you’ll want to have a lot of options. After all, finding the right one can be tricky. Fortunately, Ritani has a massive inventory. At the time of writing this, Ritani carries 149,072 certified natural diamonds and 59,851 lab-grown diamonds. ** New diamonds are added to our inventory daily.

If you’re looking for more choices or a very specific stone, you should definitely check out Ritani’s diamond inventory instead.

Free In-Store Preview

At Jared, you can order a ring on their website or view a sample ring at their store. However, most jewelers use diamond simulants in their sample rings, so you won't get to see what the final product is like until you’ve purchased it.

But at Ritani, you can preview your completed engagement ring or loose diamond at a partner jeweler or WeWork near you. We use your selected diamond and set it in the ring. It’s 100% free; there’s no extra fee for this service and if you don’t like the ring, you can walk away.

Jared does not offer this service.

Commission

According to Jared’s job postings, their employees receive a commission when they make sales. When someone is making commission off a sale, it’s a little harder to trust their suggestions and advice.

At Ritani, our diamond experts and customer service team do not receive commission. You can trust that you are getting unbiased advice. We never try to push a sale; we just want you to find the right diamond, whether it’s from us or somewhere else.

Lifetime Warranty

Ritani stands behind the quality of its products. Your engagement ring and/or wedding band is covered by our lifetime warranty in the unlikely event of a manufacturing defect. At Jared, they will only repair or replace your mounting if a manufacturing defect is discovered within the first 12 months of purchase.

The Bottom Line

Where you buy your diamond or engagement ring truly makes a difference, but don’t just take it from us – check out what our customers are saying.

“It came in a beautiful box and the packaging was perfect! I had gone to countless jewelers only to be offered low-quality stones for 10x’s the price. Ritani made everything easy and understandable for someone who was new in the diamond/jewelry market. The stone was beyond what I could imagine, the images don’t do it justice. The setting was phenomenal quality and carries the stone flawlessly. If you’re looking for a sign to buy lab-grown. This is it. Do it. You won’t regret it.” -Tito V.

“The price had me worried. I mean, how can it be that low? Although I don’t have the answer to that question, I do know that I am speechless at the quality of this diamond. It met all of my wildest expectations- and then some.” -Daniel M.

“I shopped all the online sellers--and I won't call their names, here; but in making my rounds, I got daily emails, texts, etc., from each one, showing similar stones to those they found in my search criteria at their sites. I compared prices (I'm a hard shopper!) back and forth and in my last search with Ritani, within a few hours I received correspondence that said, along with other recommended stones, "We found this one and think it's a better value!" Well, it was! I had been looking for an approximate two carat Oval, VS1-VS2, H-I, Excellent Cut...and the stone their artificial intelligence selected was a 2.4 carat stone, that met my specs...and was about $500-800 less than the ones I had just seen in my last search that were from 1.83 to 2.13 carats. Thrilled?!? Oh, wow! Honestly, it's the most beautiful diamond I've ever held in my "grippers"! Eye clean, full of fire: 10.4mm x 7.5mm x 4.72!!! Simply beautiful. Outstanding! And my appraisal was 40% higher than I paid! I Iove what you do--and what you found for me!!! Your Customer Service and Gemologist's Team are exceptional!” -Anonymous
